The unique fair for contemporary art in The Hague with galleries from home and abroad. Curator Marianna Dzhulai.
Art The Hague is giving special attention and support to contemporary Ukrainian art this year. The art fair will be opened by His Excellency Mr. Oleksandr Karasevych, Ambassador of Ukraine to the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The fair will showcase the modern Ukrainian art scene in collaboration with Block A Gallery UA-NL and curator Marianna Dzhulai. The featured artists include well-established figures who have represented Ukraine internationally for many years and young artists rapidly gaining professional recognition.
In recent years, the world has closely followed the developments in Ukraine, unfortunately, due to the Russian invasion and the beginning of a devastating war. For almost three years, the world has admired the courage of this small but very brave country as it stands against the empire of evil, defending not only its sovereignty but also European democratic values. These tragic circumstances have sparked a wide interest in this European nation, which had been absorbed and cast into the shadows by Russian colonizers for many years. Who are the Ukrainians? What is their history, culture, music, art, and language? Does art continue during the war? How do artists reflect on the situation in their country? How do they live and create amidst the war, with explosions nearby? Is it possible to sustain creative work under such conditions?
Leading institutions worldwide have begun providing a platform for Ukrainian voices, to discover this unique culture. Over the past three years, Ukrainian exhibitions have been held with great success at renowned museums such as the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum in Madrid, the Albertinum in Dresden, the Ukrainian Museum in New York, Saatchi Gallery and Tate Modern in London, as well as in notable museums in the Netherlands like the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, Museum de Fundatie in Zwolle, and Stedelijk Museum Breda.
This year, visitors to Art The Hague will have the opportunity to explore works by ten Ukrainian artists selected by the curator, featuring media such as painting, sculpture, graphics, art textiles, ceramics, and installations. The Ukrainian Box at Art The Hague will feature prominent artists such as Andriy Bludov, Etching Room 1, Natalia Korf-Ivaniuk, Maria Kulikovska, Maxim Mamsikov, Nastya Podervianska, Ave Libertatemaveamor, Oleg Tistol, Max Vityk, and Roman Zhuk.
