On Friday 29 May, Mariia Kulikovska will perform “Mom, Me, Eva and Evdokia” at the closing of the Thematic Pavilion at Malta Biennale’26.

A work by Maria Kulikovska, an artist banned in Russia, has been acquired by the city of Aschaffenburg, Germany, and will now remain permanently in its permanent collection alongside masterpieces of European heritage. ‘The Shot Figure’ makes a direct reference to the events of 2014, when the so-called ‘DNR, after seizing the ‘Izolyatsia’ art centre in Donetsk, publicly shot Kulikovska’s soap and plaster casts — declaring her a ‘degenerate artist’ for depicting her own naked body.

The opening took place at the Birgu Old Armoury on 12 March 2026, and the artist’s intervention was its most significant element. Maria staged a performance in which she ‘healed’ the sculptures that had been destroyed by vandals in a public space in Copenhagen on 22 December 2025. These were works from the exhibition 'My Body Is a Battlefield'.

A selection of works from the series Watercolors on the Paper, Received from Migration Offices by Ukrainian artist Maria Kulikovska has entered the permanent collection of Fenix — the newly opened Museum of Migration in Rotterdam — as of 16 May.

On February 22, in New York at Mriya Gallery, the first solo exhibition of Maria Kulikovska will open. The exhibition, titled Once Leda Found an Egg — Blue Like a Hyacinth, takes its poetic name from a fragment of a poem by the ancient Greek poetess Sappho.

Almost three years after Russia invaded Ukraine, numerous works and sites of Ukrainian heritage have been destroyed, damaged or looted. Since the beginning of the conflict, culture has been a key strategic concern in a war that is aimed at eradicating Ukrainian identity. Could artists play a role in this war? How to combine an artistic approach with a political perspective? Can art influence how the war’s narrative is constructed?
